Proofreading is the final stage of the writing process, involving a detailed check for surface-level errors to ensure a document is accurate, polished, and ready for publication – either in print or online. It focuses on correcting typographical errors, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting inconsistencies rather than rewriting or restructuring content.

Errors in text can damage the credibility of the author, or the reputation of an organisation, but can also have a more serious impact – think, for example, about instructions for a medicinal product containing an incorrect dose or a report with incorrect figures in tables that have not been proofread!
